Cool picture… I wonder who put on all those caps….

Before I downloaded my e-audiobook I played with the player a little. Because I did not read the instructions it took me awhile to learn how to make it play. Also, for awhile I thought that there were no ways to skip tracks…. until I discovered it by accident. Turns out that the plus and minus buttons double as volume AND skip/ go back. I thought that I would not need the instructions since I already have an iPod, but maybe I should have actually read them.

So that was the hard part of the 24th thing. Transfering an e-audiobook from Overdrive to the player was a piece of cake. I am looking forward to when I can do this for my iPod (soon, yay!). I had already installed and dowloaded an e-audiobook for a previous thing, so that part was already done. I just hit transfer and that was it. Piece of cake.

My favorite discovery was Zoho Creator. I am excited about my little movie database. I only wish that I had more spare time to add things to it! The web 2.0 awards was also a great discovery because there are so many great sites to explore. A friend and I used cocktail builder, and I am sure that I will use several other sites that won as well.

This program aided my lifelong learning a little. I cannot say that it aided it a lot since I already knew about/used most of the websites that we played with. Those that I did not use/ know about I probably would have found out about from either a friend or through surfing the net. Although, I will say that it probably would have been awhile before I found that library dominoes youtube video!

I think that a way to improve it would be to get more people to stick with it. Many staff members started it, but it seems that a lot less are finishing. Maybe having one thing a week would be better and allow people to stay on top of it. That would mean that it would take a lot longer to finish though.

1. I rarely listen to audiobooks. I have listened to a grand total of five complete audiobooks in my entire life. I am a music addict, so that is what I prefer to listen to. I have checked out other audiobooks, but I never made it past the first disc. Maybe one day I will love audiobooks….

2. I have an iPod and the e-audiobooks do not work on them. If I was to download one, I would like to transfer it to my iPod. But, with the free mp3 player I guess this reason will no longer be true. Still, I am excited that the system is going to offer some mp3 titles instead of just WMA. This will allow the many iPod owners to use Overdrive.

Even though I do not really listen to audiobooks, it was good for me to use Overdrive. Having downloaded an audiobook will allow me to be more knowledgable when I tell patrons about it. First I downloaded the Media Console, which was easy. Then I downloaded the Sherlock Holmes Theatre, which won an Audie award in 2006. It is a couple of Sherlock Holmes plays that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote. I downloaded it because I like Sherlock Holmes and I had never read/seen these plays before. It was very easy, and I would encourage anyone who likes audiobooks to use Overdrive.

Microblogging…. is not something that I would do personally, but it makes sense for a library system to do it. I was surprised to see that the Monroe County Library System in NY, which is the county next to the one that I grew up in, is on twitter. Many other library systems are on twitter as well, including the Free Library of Philadelphia. I think that this is a good way to get programs to the public. It is sort of like an additional event keeper.

All in all, I think that I will just stick to iTunes for finding new podcasts.

I think that I will mention an award winner that I have been aware of for a year but others may not be aware of. Myxer is a great way to get ringtones. You can upload a song or choose a ringtone that someone else uploaded. You select the portion of the song that you want as your ringtone. And then they send it to you and you set it as your ringtone! All it costs is the cost of textmessage.

A site that I was excited about was MOG. It is the third place winner for music. I had heard of last.fm and pandora before, but not MOG. It looks like a good site. Another music / social networking site for those of you interested in such things is lala. It used to be a site focused on trading cds with one another and now it has morphed into a place where you can upload your music library so that you can hear it from any computer, download music, look at friend’s music, find new music, etc.

I also think that I will use the cocktail builder website…. Sometimes I just need a drink after dealing with computer problems and library science classwork.

The reason I love it is because I can make a database/ application-esque thing. I do not have Microsoft Access on my laptop and I have been looking for a way to make a kind of database to keep track of my movies. I was able to do that finally with Zoho Creator! Yes, I could have made a simple spreadsheet of my movies in Excel, but having a form is just much nicer to me. Now I can catalog my movies!!

Ok, so this blog has not really been about the Zoho writer. Basically, if you are going to edit your docs in more than one place you should use Zoho or google docs. Likewise if you are working on a group doc (or use a wiki!). If you do not want to spend money on MS Office, use Zoho or Google docs or get open office. If you do not fall into those three categories, then it is not applicable to you.
