social networking and libraries
January 3, 2009I looked at WCPL’s myspace and facebook page. They seem to be useful tools for connecting with teens and keeping them abreast of the library’s activites. I think that myspace and facebook pages for libraries should be teen focused. I do not think that most older adults would think of checking facebook for whats going on at the library. Most teens have a myspace or facebook account anyways, so it makes sense for a library’s young adult program to try and reach teens that way.
Microblogging…. is not something that I would do personally, but it makes sense for a library system to do it. I was surprised to see that the Monroe County Library System in NY, which is the county next to the one that I grew up in, is on twitter. Many other library systems are on twitter as well, including the Free Library of Philadelphia. I think that this is a good way to get programs to the public. It is sort of like an additional event keeper.
